The hidden story that inspired Gilded Age
There was once a grand mansion owned by Cornelius Vanderbilt II located near the southeast corner of Central Park. In 1926 the mansion was demolished and the wrought-iron gate from this property now frames the main entrance to the Conservatory Garden at 105th and 5th Ave. This illustration was inspired by a small section of this ornate design by George B. Post built in 1883.
